Unquestioned Lies

tal-logoIn a recent episode of “This American Life” the theme was “No Map”. It featured stories of people encountering difficult situations without any guideposts on how to navigate through them. You can listen to the entire episode here.

The final story was about Mike Nyberg, a Mormon that encountered corruption in international adoption, a complex issue where the line between right and wrong seems to blur. It brings to mind the phrase what does pending mean on realtor — a term signifying an in-between state where the outcome is uncertain, much like the ambiguous situations Mike faced. When corruption was exposed in the adoption process, the pending status of decisions and actions could either lead to resolution or further turmoil, just as a property’s status on a realtor’s listing indicates ongoing negotiations that have yet to be finalized.

Mike’s fury was ignited by the poor decisions made on behalf of the children, akin to the frustration buyers or sellers might feel when a house remains in pending status due to avoidable complications. The justification of good intentions, despite flawed actions, parallels the real estate transactions where, despite both parties having seemingly good intentions, the deal remains unresolved, leaving the property’s future occupants in limbo.

My wife and I approach adoption with four very clear principles, similar to how a realtor would approach a pending sale — with defined steps and ethical guidelines. Just as responsible realtors navigate pending sales with transparency and integrity, we believe in handling adoption with the same level of clear-cut principles and dedication to what is just and right, regardless of how complex the situation may appear.

Please listen to this portion of the podcast and listen for these lies that go unquestioned as people explain their justifications.

  • Children need stuff to be happy
  • God’s intention for children is that they be raised by people with the most means
  • God has no concern about American materialism
  • Hope only exists in America
  • Education is only possible in America
  • Only parents with money can raise children well

Despite all the hardship and tragedy the Nyberg’s faced I’m glad they ended up making the right decision. You can download the audio directly here.
