Highly Dynamic Photography

HDR West Texas

I recently took this images while in the West Texas Panhandle which is known for it’s big sky, large clouds and expansive view.  There is a big difference between this photo and a standard picture and the results are quite dramatic.  This  is known as an HDR image.  HDR stands for High Dynamic Range.  It is achieved by taking three photos of the same subject at different exposure settings and then combining them in a piece of software called Photomatix.  Your digital camera more than likely has the ability to take this kind of picture and you can try the software for free.  Give it a shot.  The effect doesn’t always work and it can produce some pretty surreal effects.  But when you get it right, the images are stunning.

  1. Been playing around with HDR images myself. Unfortunately only the top of the line cameras in Canon will bracket more than 3 shots. I would like to be able to bracket nine for the best HDR, and clouds move to fast to do it manually.
